The Ultimate Rock 'n' Roll Jam Session

On Thursday night the hubby and I headed to the opera house to see the Ultimate Rock 'n' Roll Jam Session. The Ultimate Rock 'n' Roll Jam Session tells the story behind an impromptu meeting in 1956 at Sun Studios of three of the biggest rock and roll stars of the time Carl Perkins, Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis (who at the time was just one of the studios house musicians) and the jam session that happened to be caught on tape by Sun records owner Sam Phillips.

The four musicians spent hours playing music, competing with each other, comparing riffs and making a beautiful racket that was some of the best music you’ll ever hear.

The show was an absolutely sensational showcase of rock and roll music with some of Australia's best musicians. Ezra Lee was fantastic on piano, his hands were mesmerising as they not so much tinkled the ivories by smashed them into submission. James Blundell and Nick Barker were simply awesome and Doug Parkinson's crooning bluesy voice was stunning and as for the sun studio trio, well put simply they rocked

Here's a clip about the show:

I'm Baaaaack!

Happy Belated Valentines Day

Valentines day seems to have passed the hubby and I by without either of us realising. What with the move and the fact I worked a double shift on V day we didn't have time to do anything special. Although we have planned to have a nice quiet evening in our new place on Thursday night with a yummy dinner followed by a couple of glasses of wine and a bubbly bath together!

I'm sure everyone by now have heard the story of St Valentine but did you know that the first personal ad was published in the weekly phamplet entitled A Collection for Improvement of Husbandry and Trade in 1695 and read:

"A Gentleman about 30 Years of Age that says he had a Very Good Estate, would willingly Match himself to some Good Young Gentlewoman, that has a Fortune of 3000l. or thereabouts, and he will make Settlement to Content."

And people have been using personal ads to find love ever since!!!

My big sis' boyfriend sent me this pinup picture he created digitally (through some computer magic I don't understand!) So I thought I would share it with you all.

What Emma Did - 13th February 2011

I cant believe its been a week since I last posted. I did plan on posting on the Chinese New Year Parade but unfortunately just as we were leaving home to catch the train into the city a big storm blew in and we didn't fancy standing outside in the cold and wet so we gave it a miss. Ahh well there's always next year. As for the rest of the week I have been:

Looking at units and being accepted on one that we put the forms in for in the space of two hours!
Packing our thousands of books
Making a huge shopping list for an epic shopping trip to Ikea
Organising a cleaning party to clean the old place with the UN girlies
Enjoying ice cream by the sea on my break between jobs (I can't believe this is our first icecreamery trip of the summer)
Abandoning our valentines day trip plans as we're both working on the day and will be too busy unpacking at the new place
Being kept awake until after two by our noisy neighbours when I had to be up for work at 5!
Getting up at 1am to have a cup of tea and de-stress from noisy neighbours and spilling half a cup of boiling water down my leg!

Emma aime at the Movies: Black Swan

The hubby and I went to see Black Swan yesterday. I have wanted to see this film ever since I saw the trailer for it online some months back despite the fact that I don't like ballet and I am a real wuss when it comes to horror films. I have to say Black Swan didn't disappoint and it's easy to see why it has been nominated for so many awards.

The film tells the story of Nina a dancer with the New York ballet company who strives for perfection in her dance. Nina is pure and naive thanks to an overbearing mother but when she is picked to play the Swan Queen in the companies latest production of swan lake Nina must discover her dark side and this leads her to a downward spiral of delusions and paranoia.

I found the movie both stunning and grotesque, disturbingly so in some scenes. The themes of the duality between the black and the white swan and the imagery that goes along with it where fabulously written and portrayed. Nina's decline into a world of dark delusions and paranoia was fantastically portrayed. Black Swan is definitely one of those movies that you would want to watch more than once as every time you watch it you notice more little things that you didn't see the first time. As for those that slated the film I can only think that they didn't understand the complexity of the imagery involved in the story and the parallels between Nina's delusions and the story of the ballet Swan Lake.
